Whitman and Dickinson assignment
Now that you have read some background information on Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman, as well as read some of their poetry take a moment to write some of the differences you learned between the two of them. Did they live their lives in the same way? Who was their audience? Were they well known while they were alive? After you have answered the above questions, and added your own thoughts, respond to someone else's post. Do you agree, disagree etc.?

Emily Dickinson lived a bad life while Whitman hung out with Washington. Emily hand people read her poem but Whitman had people look at the Leaves of Grass Whitman was known while alive I have no questions

Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman both lived very different lives. Emily Dickinson's life had many hardships and she isolated herself. Walt Whitman was more involved with the world and liked writing and politics. Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson attracted different audiences as well. Emily Dickinson the more love sick crowd and Walt Whitman the more political social crowd. I think Emily Dickinson was more popular after Death and Whitman was very popular while he lived.

yeah i gree with everyone else emily dickinson was like an anti sociale never leave her house and Whitman was the person who had enough guts to nurse people during the war in washington when u come from 2 differnt world u write 2 differnt was and both r good...btw the sweetness poem is amazing!!!!
they lived a sort'a different lives. Emil'y life had lots of hard times and she didn't like people other than that boy friend dude she was abssesed about that she met on that trip. Walt was more like out going with the worlds of writing and politics. Walt and Emily had meny different audiences. Emily had more dark emo people and Walt more political and noarmal people. Emily became popluar after she died becuse of the book that were found. Walt was very respected while he was alive.
Emily was very dependant on others, and wanted to be loved.
She lived in a very lonely environment, which affected her poems.
Whitman, on the other hand lived in a very populated environment.
He was very gregarious(ENGLISH VOCAB) and loved politics also.
These two ppl are the exact opposite.

Both wrote twards different audiences. Whitman was from Washington, and Dickinson was and lonley woman how took the 40 year old guys place of living in their parent basement. OH! And Dickonson was gay...
Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman were two totally different writers and lived different lifestyles. Walt Whitman was more outgoing and learning more about nature. While Dickinson was isolated from the world and would write about her being lonely all the time. I'm mad because I already wrote this at school but the internet didn't accept my post

Emily lived her life more in solitude while whitman liked to be in the public and social. they had completly different audences because the people that read there specific poems connected with the authors life style. emily was not know until after death while walt was.

they did not live their lives the same way. emily live in tatol phisyical isolation(creep), whitman traveled and hung out and took care of the sick and wounded.whitman had a bigger audience of people around dc, but emily had a very small audiance or none at all at times. emily was known after she and passed away, on the other hand whitman was known while he was alive.
Ems and Wit lived tots different lives. Ems life was hard so she stayed in her house, and tried to avoid peeps as much as she could. Wit was more around his peeps and enjoyed being around them. Different groups of peeps ejoyed their wrights.

I agree with everyone. Emily was a very sheltered person and avoided people as much as she could. Her poems were affected by her lonely life. Whitman had a more outgoing personality. He also wrote more about politics. Whitman was recognized while he was alive, but Emily was only after her death.
Dickinson was an emo and Whitman was genius.

!Emily Dickinson lived with lots of heart eaks and emotional problems with nobody really liking her for a long period of time.Whitman was very populare and loved by alot of people because he was populare wile he lived wile Emily was not loved by crowds of people cause she wasnt all that known untill after her death. there writing styles where very diff. one wrote about her heart eak and the other liked to write to political people.
Whitman was a popular poet while he was alive, his poetry reflected lessons about life an were writen in a happy emotion. Whitman was also involved in the society. Dickinson was not a popular poet during her lifetime. Her peotry reflected loneliness and sadness. The emotion in her poetry was caused by the fact that she spent the majority of her life inside her house, isolated from the world. The few people she came in contact with inspired her. These inspirations were seen in her poems a s a slight feeling of happiness. Whitman and Dickenson's poetic forms were completly different. These differences are obvious and show that these two great poets lived vary different life styles. Also Dickinson's poetry targeted people who's lives were sad, gloomy, and lonely. While Whitman's poetry targeted people who lived normal lives.

dickinson and whitman had alot of difference in their life style. They were two totally different people. Emily sort of stayed away from the world while whitman was in all this nature stuff. while dickinson had critics look at her poems and other writings. while whitman examined leaves and other nature things. THey were both known in their life time but once they past away they would no longer be remebered.

I agree with Michelle and Ashley. Even though E.D. and W.W. lived during the same time perioid they were totally different people. E.D. lived in isolation and spent most of her time with her family. Her poems express her lonliness. E.D. poems were known only by her few friends until after her death.
W.W. was an outgoing person. He moved around often. He was well known during his life.
Emily Dickinson lived a Lonely and hard life. Whitman had a very different life he Wasn't Lonely he helped people during the War. So they lived very different Lives.

Walt Whitman had more of a social life and wasn't alone in life. Some of his poety was known locally and he was involved in the political world. Emily Dickinson had quite the opposite life. She was antisocial and lonely. The loneliness cuased Emily to write sad and beautiful poetry. The types of crowds that Whitman drew were the people he would socialize with, which would be the political crowd. Dickinson would attract the crowd that enjoyed the sadness and love poems.So Whitman was well known while he was living and enjoying life while Dickinson's work wasn't appreciated until she died.

Great job English 10! I loved reading your responses, and the comments on other people's responses. Emily and Walt had very different lives, yet both led interesting lives that influenced their poetry. Everyone in 1st hour should have posted before this. If you didn't it is late.
walt lived a totally differnet liffe stlye then emily because walt was in a war and emily was more of a loner and liked to do things by herself.

Right so. Emily rarely left her house, and Whitman moved to be a nurse. Emily became popular after death, and Whitman had already gained populatiry while alive.
Emily wrote dark poems, Whitman wrote about political things.
So yea. What David said. :) I wouldn't say the EXACT oppposite though. They both wrote about how they felt, and both were poets.

I as well agree with everyone. Emily dickinson was a very lonely person who was just trying to find love. Her feelings on life effected her poetry. she was very isolated and kept to her self.
Whitman was more of an outgoing person. His poetry had more of a happier flow to it. Whitman was more famous while he was living and Dickinson was famous after death when her family found her journals and published it.
over all they were very different people and had very different views on life.
This thing is getting so confusing and i dont get how we get graded on this when alot of ppl cant get it to work. On the other point I think that all of this whole new techno thing is really cool and all the stories we read are really good.
